Every December, the same item shows up in our engraving queue by the thousands: the hip flask. It's small enough for a stocking or a desk drawer, cheap enough to buy in bulk, and personal enough that people actually keep it. That combination — size, price, sentiment — is why flasks are a Christmas workhorse for bars, promo companies and corporate gift buyers.
Because it's a gifting product, most buyers want a name, a monogram or a logo on it. That's where orders go sideways. Bad artwork files, the wrong engraving method for the finish, or an MOQ surprise at the last minute are the three most common delays I see in October and November. Here's how to avoid all three.
1. What "engraved" actually means on a hip flask
On a stainless flask, "engraving" usually means laser marking, but there are four processes that all get called engraving — and they don't behave the same way. The right one depends on the flask finish, and matching the process to the finish is the difference between a gift that reads clearly and one that looks smudged.
| Process | How it marks the steel | How it wears | Color | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laser engraving (coated flask) | Beam removes the paint/coating, exposing the silver steel beneath | Permanent — nothing to rub off | Silver on black/color | Lowest; no plate, digital setup |
| Deep laser etch (bare steel) | Higher power vaporizes a thin layer of steel | Permanent, lightly tactile | Frosted silver mark | Low |
| UV print | Ink cured onto the surface | Years, but can scratch or fade with pocket wear | Full color | Low at volume |
| Silk-screen print | Ink pressed through a mesh, then baked | Wears with heavy handling | 1–3 spot colors | Cheapest in high volume |
For Christmas flasks, we recommend laser engraving on a matte black or colored body. The contrast is the best you'll get — clean silver lettering on black — and there's no ink to wear off in a jacket pocket. Bare brushed steel etches beautifully too, but the mark is subtler: more frost than bright.

2. Sizes: what to stock for gifting
Buyers overthink sizes. For gifting, the three capacities that matter are 6oz, 7oz and 8oz (roughly 180–240 ml). 6oz is the stocking-stuffer; 7oz is the default; 8oz reads as the "full-size" gift. 12oz and up exist, but they stop feeling like a hip flask and start feeling like a bottle.

Pocket fit matters more than capacity math. All three sizes fit a jacket pocket; the real question is how much engraving area you need for a name plus a date plus a small logo. If your artwork is a full crest, size up to 8oz. If it's three initials, 6oz is plenty. See our hip flask size guide for the full breakdown.
3. Artwork specs that skip the sample round
The single biggest time-saver in October is sending the right file the first time. A phone screenshot is the number-one cause of rework, and every rework costs days you don't have before the shipping window closes.
- Send vector files — AI, PDF, SVG or EPS. Vector artwork scales cleanly to any flask size. A low-res JPG of a logo is the fastest way to add a round of back-and-forth.
- Keep line weight at or above 0.3 mm. Hairlines below that either burn away or close up when the laser passes.
- Keep text above roughly 1.5–2 mm in height. Small serif text is the first thing to turn into an unreadable blur on curved steel.
- Watch the curved face. A hip flask front is slightly curved, so keep the critical text in the flat center panel and let a border or pattern wrap the edges.
- Contrast first. On matte black, the laser exposes silver steel, so you get contrast for free. On brushed steel, ask for a deeper etch if you want it to read from across the room.
Send your logo as vector plus a note on placement and size, and you'll get a digital proof the same day. One proof, one physical sample, then bulk — that's the sequence that avoids a ruined batch. The full artwork rules are in our hip flask engraving artwork guide.
4. Real MOQs and what they cost
Custom hip flasks are one of the lowest-risk Christmas items to order, because the MOQ is modest. The flasks linked below start at MOQ 50 pieces, with reference listing prices from US$1.10 to US$1.80 per unit as of late October 2026.
Two things move your landed cost beyond the unit price: engraving setup and gift packaging. Laser engraving needs no physical plate or screen, so setup is a small digital file fee — and it's often waived when you engrave the full MOQ. If you want each flask in a gift box or a velvet pouch, add that at the quote stage: a plain flask in a polybag ships for less, but a boxed flask is what sells at a Christmas market stall.

5. The Christmas ordering timeline
The hard deadline for Christmas 2026 is closer than it looks. Add a 15–25 day production window for a custom order, plus shipping, and you want the order confirmed in early November — earlier if it's traveling by sea. The full cut-off dates by freight method are in our Christmas 2026 ordering deadlines post.
A practical rule: confirm the order and approve the sample by mid-November, and there's still room for express air freight to the US, UK or Australia. Ordering after the first week of December means choosing a pre-stocked, un-engraved design and adding the engraving on arrival — a real option if your local engraver works with steel.
