When a buyer sends us a size question, it usually reads "I need a 500ml shaker" or "is 700ml big enough for a bar?". The number is almost never the thing they actually need to decide. Capacity is the easiest spec to copy from a competitor's listing and the easiest one to get wrong — because a shaker's stated size says almost nothing about how many drinks it makes.
This guide explains what the ml numbers actually measure, which sizes working bars genuinely reorder, and how to match a size to your menu instead of to a rival's product page. If you want the short version: the 500–750ml band is where nearly every order lands.
1. What "500ml" actually measures
Capacity is the volume of the tin filled to the very brim — not the amount of cocktail that comes out of it. Ice takes up room, and a cocktail shaker should only be filled about two-thirds full if it's going to seal and mix properly. A 500ml tin with ice and ingredients gives you one, maybe two, finished drinks; a 750ml tin gives you two or three. That single fact is the one most buyers miss.
For reference: 500ml is about 17–18 US fluid ounces, 700ml is about 24 ounces, 750ml about 25, and 1000ml about 34. When you see "18oz & 28oz" on a Boston shaker listing, that's the two tins in the set — roughly 530ml and 830ml.
2. The three sizes buyers actually ask about
500–550ml — the single-serve size
Fifty to five-hundred-and-fifty millilitres is the size we pack most for gift sets, hotel rooms and promotional runs. It makes one or two drinks, sits comfortably in one hand, and doesn't intimidate a home user. If your customer will shake one cocktail at a time on a kitchen counter, this is the right size — anything bigger is dead weight and dead freight. Our 550ml 10-piece set is a typical example of how this size gets sold as a gift set.
Below 500ml there's also a 350ml class (about 12oz), which we build for compact travel and gift sets. It's the same construction scaled down — fine for a single martini, too small for anything a working bar would put behind the rail.
700–750ml — the workhorse
This is the size behind most real bars. It makes two or three drinks per shake, still fits a standard hand, and isn't so heavy that a bartender's wrist gives out on hour four. Restaurants, hotel bars and event companies land here by default — the capacity handles a table's round of drinks without over-filling. The 550/750ml set we carry shows the range that covers most of this band in one listing.
1000ml and up — batching, not shaking
A litre shaker sounds impressive on a spec sheet and is mostly wrong for shaking. Filled with ice and two rounds' worth of ingredients, it weighs more than a kilo and is hard to control. In practice, big tins get used for batching and stirring large quantities, or for high-volume service where two drinks are poured from one build. Most bars that think they want 1000ml are better served by two 750ml tins — faster, lighter, and easier to train new staff on.
| Capacity | Real-world use | Drinks per shake | Typical buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 350ml (~12oz) | Compact gift & travel sets | 1 | Promo runs, retailers |
| 500–550ml (~18oz) | Single serves | 1–2 | Gift sets, hotels, home bars |
| 700–750ml (~24–25oz) | The bar standard | 2–3 | Restaurants, bars, events |
| 1000ml+ (~34oz) | Batching, stirring | 3–4 | High-volume service |
These are the capacity bands as we build them on the floor, not promises of drink counts — how many drinks a shaker yields depends on your recipe, ice and pour sizes. Match the band to your menu, not the other way round.
3. How a Boston shaker uses two sizes at once
Boston shakers complicate the sizing question, because the "set" is two tins of different sizes — typically an 18oz tin nested into a 28oz tin, or a metal tin over a mixing glass. You don't fill both; the smaller tin holds the ingredients and ice, and the larger one seals on top and becomes the pouring vessel. That's why listings show two numbers. If you've read our Boston vs Cobbler vs Parisian comparison, you already know the Boston tin is the professional standard — the 18/28 pairing is simply the size that gives a bartender headroom to shake hard without the contents climbing out.
4. Why bigger isn't always better
Three reasons a larger shaker can cost you money instead of saving it:
- Steel and freight. A 750ml tin uses more stainless than a 500ml tin and packs fewer pieces per carton, so your landed cost per unit rises even before the logo goes on.
- Waste. If your drinks are single serves, the extra volume never gets used — you're paying for air.
- Handling. A heavy, over-filled shaker is slower, and more likely to be put down mid-shake and never picked up again.
On the flip side, the larger tin gives you a bigger flat surface for a logo or engraving. If your brand mark is wide, a 700–750ml tin prints better than a 500ml one — worth reading our customization and custom engraving notes before you commit.
5. What bars actually order
From the orders we pack, the pattern is consistent: the 500–750ml band is where nearly everything lands. Working bars order 550ml or 750ml tins; gift and promo buyers order 500ml; 350ml goes to compact sets; and 1000ml is a niche for batch service. If you're a bar or restaurant, start at 700–750ml. If you're buying for gifts or giveaways, 500–550ml is the sweet spot. Our wholesale cocktail shaker sets page walks through the sizes we keep in stock, and the 550ml set brief shows one workhorse spec in detail.
6. Five questions to answer before you order
- How many drinks does one shaker need to make at once?
- Who's using it — a trained bartender or an end customer at home?
- Does the menu batch anything (punches, large-format cocktails)?
- What's the carton count and freight impact of the bigger tin?
- Where does the logo go, and is the print area big enough on the smaller size?
