Brushed vs mirror steel: where the laser mark lands best
The finish you choose decides how the engraving reads. Laser engraving doesn't add ink — it removes a microscopic layer of metal (or plating) to reveal a mark underneath. So the whole game is contrast between the engraved area and the surface around it.

Brushed steel is the workhorse: it hides fingerprints, and the grain gives the engraving something to sit against. Mirror shows the sharpest mark, which is why bars that want a crisp wordmark pick it. Neither is "better" — they serve different looks.
Engraving vs printing on a shaker
On a shaker that gets handled, washed and dropped into an ice well, engraving is the durable option. It's part of the metal, so it won't peel, chip or fade the way a screen print can after months of service. Printing still has a place — it's cheaper at very small runs and holds full-color artwork that a laser can't. But for a single-color logo on steel, engraving is what I steer buyers toward. The MOQ reality: plate fee or no plate fee
Unlike screen printing — which needs a physical screen or plate — laser engraving is a digital process. There's no plate to make or store. Some suppliers still charge a one-time "setup" or "logo fee" anyway, especially on small runs; others fold it into the per-unit price. Both are legitimate. What matters is that you ask, because a hidden setup fee is the most common surprise on a first engraved order.
At our factory the working minimum for engraved shakers is 50 pieces — that's the MOQ you'll see on the Alibaba listings below. The per-unit engraving cost shrinks as the order grows, because the same artwork setup and machine time are spread across more units: the setup for 50 pieces and for 5,000 is essentially the same. If you're pricing a first run, ask your supplier for the engraving charge at 50, 500 and 1,000 units and watch how the gap closes.

Fonts and artwork specs that save a sample round
The two specs that cause most back-and-forth are line weight and file format. A laser marks what you send it, so thin script fonts and hairline strokes can burn away or close up on curved steel. Send vector artwork — AI, PDF, or SVG — with strokes no thinner than about 0.5 pt at final size, and convert text to outlines so the font doesn't shift between machines.
Engraving depth on a shaker is shallow by design — deep engraving risks thinning the wall of a food-grade vessel. Fine detail survives, but a photograph or a heavy gradient won't translate the way it does in print. Bold, single-color logos read best. And remember the surface is curved: a 550 ml conical shaker gives you roughly a palm-sized flat panel, while a Boston tin is mostly straight-walled, which makes it the easiest shape to engrave a longer wordmark across.
Finish options beyond plain steel
Beyond brushed and mirror, two finishes dominate the engraved-gift market. Copper plating gives a warm, vintage look and engraves to reveal the steel underneath — popular for groomsmen and anniversary sets. Powder-coated color (black, navy, and matte tones) engraves to a bright bare-steel mark that stands out sharply against a dark body. As a rule of thumb: colored shakers read more like merchandise, plain steel reads more like barware. The gift market leans colored; the bar-equipment market leans plain.

Five questions to ask before you order
- "Is there a setup or logo fee, or is engraving folded into the unit price?" — Get this in writing before you compare quotes.
- "What's your real MOQ for engraved pieces?" — Some suppliers list the MOQ for blank shakers, then add a higher minimum once engraving is involved.
- "Can I approve a photo proof before you run the batch?" — You should see the mark on an actual shaker, not just a render.
- "Will you match my brand font exactly, or substitute your closest?" — Outline your artwork so there's nothing to substitute.
- "Which finish reads best at my logo's size?" — A logo that looks strong on a flat screen can vanish on a 12 cm curved tin.
