An ice bucket is one of the few bar items a hotel guest touches directly — in a room, by the pool, or on a banquet table. It either arrives dry and silent, or it sweats a ring onto the tablecloth and gets remembered for the wrong reason. That's why a spec sheet, not a photo, is the right way to buy hotel ice buckets in bulk.
This is the technical companion to our guide on hotel ice bucket finishes, logo etching and reorder patterns. That post covers how a bucket is branded and kept in service; this one covers what it's made of and how to spec it.
1. Material grades: what "stainless" and "acrylic" actually mean
When a listing says "stainless steel", the grade is the whole story. 304 (18/8) stainless holds up in damp room-service and poolside conditions without rusting. 201 stainless is cheaper and looks identical off the production line, but it rusts sooner in humid or chlorinated air. The quick field check: a magnet clings to most 201 and 430, and not to properly annealed 304. We wrote a plain-English guide to the magnet and acid checks if you want the full method.
For plastic buckets, "acrylic" on a listing usually means one of two resins:
- Acrylic (PMMA) — lower cost, excellent clarity, but scratches more easily with heavy handling.
- Polycarbonate (PC) — more impact-resistant and tolerant of commercial dishwashing, with slightly less crisp clarity.
For a hotel, ask the supplier to state the resin in writing. If the bucket will ever hold unwrapped ice, food-grade contact certification matters too.
| Material | Corrosion & durability | Look & feel | Best hotel use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304 stainless | Rust-resistant in humid / chlorinated air | Weighty, mirror or brushed | Room service, suite amenity, fine-dining table |
| 201 stainless | Cheaper; rusts sooner near moisture and pool chemicals | Same shine as 304 off the line | Not recommended for poolside or damp rooms |
| Acrylic (PMMA) | Scratches more easily | Light, bright, very clear | Banquet, back-of-house, budget poolside |
| Polycarbonate (PC) | Impact-resistant, dishwasher-tolerant | Clear, slightly less crisp | Poolside, high-volume banquet, outdoor |
2. The double-wall question — and what it does and doesn't do
A double-wall ice bucket is two layers with an air gap between them. What that buys you is not thermos-level ice retention — an open-top bucket can never hold ice for hours the way a sealed tumbler can. What it buys is a dry exterior and a cool-to-the-touch surface: the inner wall carries the cold, and the air gap stops condensation from forming a puddle on the table.
That detail is exactly what a luxury property should specify. A single-wall steel bucket left on a marble table will sweat and leave a ring; a double-wall one won't, and it won't chill a guest's hand when they reach for the bottle.
A double-wall stainless wine and champagne cooler — the air gap between walls keeps the outside dry and the body cool to the touch.
For steel, double-wall means two formed bodies joined at the rim. Ask how that seam is finished and whether the walls are welded or press-fit; a poorly joined press-fit bucket can rattle or trap moisture between the walls.
For budget poolside and banquet programs, a double-wall acrylic or polycarbonate bucket gives the same no-sweat benefit at a fraction of the cost. The trade-off is scratch resistance and a lighter, less weighty feel.
Double-wall clear acrylic buckets deliver the same condensation control at a lower per-unit cost for high-volume programs.
3. Capacity and dimensions by use case
Hotel ice buckets are bought by the job they do, and the job sets the capacity:
| Use case | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Room-service single bottle | 3–4 L | One champagne or wine bottle plus ice; fits a service tray |
| Fine-dining table service | 4–8 L | Two bottles, or wine and champagne for the table |
| Banquet / event | 8 L | Shared table buckets, quick refills, fewer trips to the back |
| Poolside / beer / party | 12 L | Straight-sided tubs that hold bottles upright |
The classic boat-bowl shape is the wine and champagne form; straight-sided tubs serve beer and soft drinks better because they hold more bottles upright. Most hotels run two shapes: boat-bowl for the dining room, straight tub for pool and banquet.
Straight-sided beverage tubs from 1 L to 12 L cover banquet and poolside programs from a single supplier.
The boat-bowl form is the classic for room-service champagne and fine-dining table service.
4. The details that read "luxury" on the table
- Rim and seam — a rolled or seamless rim with no sharp edge where a guest or server grips.
- Feet — silicone or rubber feet (or a full rubber base) stop the bucket sliding and protect the tray or tabletop. Cheap to add, and guests notice.
- Handles — strong enough to lift a full bucket one-handed: riveted handles on steel, molded-in handles on plastic.
- Weight — heavier steel reads premium, but heavier means higher freight. Balance perceived quality against landed cost.
- Finish and logo — brushed vs mirror steel, laser etching vs printed logo: covered in our hotel finish and etching guide so we don't repeat it here.
5. The ten-point supplier checklist
- Material grade in writing — 304 for steel; state acrylic vs polycarbonate for plastic.
- Wall thickness specified — a thin body dents when a server drops a bottle in; get the number on the spec sheet.
- Double-wall or single-wall — and, for steel, how the two walls are joined.
- Food-grade contact certification — required if the bucket holds unwrapped ice.
- Feet or base pad material — and whether it's included or an add-on.
- Handle load rating / attachment method — riveted, welded, or molded.
- Logo method — laser etch for steel, print for plastic — and whether a setup or plate fee applies.
- Physical sample before bulk — a photo cannot show seam finish, weight or handle strength.
- Packaging — inner poly bag or divider, plus a carton drop test; a dented bucket is a rejected delivery.
- MOQ and lead time in writing — including the reorder lead time, since refills follow the same spec.
6. What this costs, roughly
Listing prices on our Alibaba store give a floor, not a promise: double-wall stainless buckets list from about US$7.95 at MOQ 50, while double-wall acrylic and clear plastic tubs list around US$1.80 at MOQ 100. These are September 2026 listing prices and they move with quantity, size and the current steel or resin cost — confirm the current price on the listing before you quote a client.

Spec the bucket, then send it to us
Send us your capacity, material and double-wall requirements — we'll quote against the spec and point out where it can be tightened. We make ice buckets, bar tools and drinkware in our Hangzhou factory, and we can put the same logo across the whole ice bucket range.
