For Promo Companies: Barware with the Best Margins and Lowest Risk

Margin math per product, the breakage reality, and how to work with a factory as a reseller — the four barware picks that win on both numbers.

If you run a promotional products business, you don't choose barware by how it looks in a catalog. You choose it by two numbers. The first is the margin between your landed cost and what a client will actually pay. The second is the percentage of a shipment that arrives whole, gets handed out, and never comes back as a complaint or a return. Get either number wrong and the order quietly eats its own profit.

We make bar gifts and drinkware on the factory floor in Hangzhou, and we quote promo companies, distributors and decorators every week. A clear pattern shows up in the reorder sheets: four product types keep coming back, because they sit in the sweet spot where margin and risk both work in your favor. This guide covers those four, the margin math behind each one, and the questions to ask a factory before you commit a client's budget.

The four barware products that win on margin and risk

1. Powder-coated stainless tumblers — the workhorse

The 20oz double-wall vacuum tumbler is the highest-perceived-value item in promo drinkware. As a factory listing it costs around US$1.35 at MOQ 500, and clients routinely read it as a US$15–25 retail product. That gap is your margin.

It's low risk because there's no glass to break in transit and a steel body survives couriers, backpacks and years of washing. The two failure points to watch are the lid and the coating: confirm the lid is leak-tested, and confirm the finish is powder coat rather than spray paint — paint flakes after a few wash cycles, powder coat doesn't.

For the decoration side of the decision, our guide to screen printing vs UV vs pad printing on drinkware walks through which method holds up on a curved steel wall. If the order is for a big event, bulk tumblers for events covers quantity planning and QC before mass production.

2. Sublimation shot glasses — the volume giveaway

When a client needs thousands of branded giveaways, blank frosted 1.5oz shot glasses are the cheapest full-color canvas in the category — about US$0.25 at MOQ 500. Because they ship blank, a decorator can sublimate full-color artwork in-house: no factory plate fee, no long art run, and the client gets a photo-quality logo instead of a one-color print.

The margin works because the unit cost is so low that a small markup per piece is already a large percentage. The risk stays manageable because shot glasses are small and thick-walled; packed in a proper carton they ship with a small, predictable breakage allowance rather than a pile of shards.

3. Stainless steel ice cubes — the quiet high-margin gift

Reusable stainless steel ice cubes are the item on this list most buyers skip past and then reorder twice. A set runs about US$1.15 at MOQ 10, and as a gift-box insert or corporate gift they read far more premium than their cost. There is no glass, no liquid and nothing to leak — which makes them the lowest-risk item here by a wide margin.

They're also the easiest upsell in the catalog: pair a set with a whiskey glass or a flask and the perceived value of the bundle jumps while your added cost stays under a dollar. If the client is assembling a gift box, see our guide to curating a whiskey gift set on a wholesale budget.

4. Unbreakable PP stemless glasses — the outdoor and event pick

For festivals, pool parties and any event with a crowd, a polypropylene stemless glass solves the problem glass can't: it doesn't shatter. At about US$0.60 at MOQ 500, it's the safe pick when a client wants a wine-glass look without the liability of broken glass on a deck or a dance floor.

The trade-off is honest, so sell it that way: PP reads as a clean, reusable plastic, not crystal. Position it as the unbreakable, logo-printable option for outdoor and high-traffic events, and it never comes back as a breakage complaint.

Breakage and warranty: what to actually plan for

Glass breaks. Any supplier who promises zero breakage is quoting hope, not a packing spec. The honest way to run a promo order is to agree a breakage allowance before production — a small percentage over which the factory makes good. On small, thick glass like shot glasses that number is usually around 1–2% or less with proper carton packing; thin stemware runs higher, which is exactly why the four picks above lean steel, plastic and small thick glass.

Three things reduce your risk more than any spec sheet:

Working with a factory as a reseller

As a promo company you don't need to become an importer — you need a factory that behaves like a supplier to a reseller. Three habits matter:

  1. Sample before bulk. A physical sample, not a photo, decides whether the item meets the client's expectation. Ask for it before the proof stage.
  2. Proof before production. Artwork goes on a template, you approve it in writing, and the approval is what production runs against.
  3. MOQ and lead time in writing. And what happens to both on a reorder. A line you reorder every season should get shorter, not start over.
